The concept of a “House” encompasses both the material and intangible historical values of a particular family or individual.

The House of Carvalho Cerqueira is currently based in the Algarve, in the south of Portugal, and includes the family’s material properties that was passed down the male line as a result of inheritances, marriages and acquisitions. It also incorporates the history of the Carvalho Cerqueira family passed on through the various generations till this day.

The Carvalho Cerqueira family started to define itself as an autonomous family in 1482, through Fernão Carvalho, a noble knight, Captain-General of Celorico de Basto, Crown collector and guardian of orphans in that same County. The great-grandson of Fernão de Carvalho, António Carvalho, Judge of Unhão, justifies his nobility and ascendancy in 1572. His brother, João Gonçalves Carvalho, succeeds him as the Chief of the House . On 20 May 1763, his descendant, Manuel Luís Álvares de Carvalho registered his nobility and the full Carvalho coat of arms . On 12 February 1817, his son, also called Manuel Luís Álvares de Carvalho, married Dona Joana de Miranda Monteiro de Barros Cerqueira, from a prominent Amarante family, with the family being known as Carvalho Cerqueira from then on. The arms registered by Manuel Luís Álvares de Carvalho have been used on family properties and manors as a sign of its prominence and of the services provided to the Portuguese Crown and State.

The family moved to the Algarve following the marriage of Judge Francisco Luís Portilho de Carvalho Cerqueira to Dona Fernanda Falcão Trindade de Carvalho Cerqueira on 5 April 1924 .

On 22 May 1981 the founder of the Foundation registered the same coat of arms with the Nobility Council (Court of Nobility), known today as the Portuguese Nobility Institute, of which he is a member, having been a youth leader of CILANE (Noble Associations of Europe Information and Liaison Commission) in Paris, on the European level for several years, and of the Portuguese Historical Nobility Association in Portugal.

The Carvalho Cerqueira family is one of Judges with lineages of local military officers who defended the Crown and State a number of times, namely in the Algarve. There are also lineages of the family that held prominent political positions at the level of the Portuguese Central Government.

The founder and President of the Foundation has an academic life in the field of Security & Defence within International Relations Studies.
